Finally out of Oregon

It seems like we’ve been in Oregon forever on this trip, but we finally made our way to Idaho today. It was a really great day, starting in our nice motel in Halfway, down about 17 miles through beautiful land with a river running through, all the way down to the Oxbow Dam, forming a huge lake. This land was so green, and then about 20 miles from there it looked again like desert. It’s really amazing how the land changes so quickly. We rode another 18 from Oxbow up to the Brownlee Dam, a huge earthen dam with a power station for Idaho Powers. This is where we crossed over from the great state of Oregon into Idaho.

We had planned to grab a bite at a general store on our map, located at the halfway point of the day, 35 miles. To our disappointment it was closed for Monday.  As a matter of fact, just about everywhere we went today was closed for Monday. We ate whatever we had in our bags, such as Snickers bars and leftover King’s Hawaiian rolls from our trip to the store last night. It would do until we could make it to Cambridge, about 18 miles and a huge climb away. So when we got to Cambridge the same thing happened, everything closed - with the exception of a Taco truck, which got our enthusiastic business.  While lunching we met a fellow bike rider , heading to Maine. However, he was being supported by his wife in a tricked out Mercedes van with bikes strapped on the back. We spoke with him briefly and his wife said that they had completed Baker City to Halfway today.  How he got to Cambridge was apparently the tricked out Mercedes van. To each his own, but it looked like he was skipping all the downhills and boring stuff and riding the rest. Good luck.

We pushed on from Cambridge and put in another 21 miles to Council Idaho to try to find a place. Ace Saloon was the only place listed but Ace said he’s not renting rooms. We opted for a camp at the local park in Council. We had a terrible Chinese dinner at Ali’s Chinese restaurant. Li has been here from China for six years. He sleeps in the restaurant and offered us rooms upstairs-he knows the owner was the best I could figure he said from his broken English. We declined and pitched our tents to finish the day.

Tomorrow looks like another good long day and we’re hopeful that Tuesday will bring us some open restaurants and maybe a hotel room too. We will see
