Dinosaurs on the road again

It has been a while, I know, since Dinosaurs on Wheels has been together. Back in 2023, we tackled the Great Divide Mountain Bike route, from Banff in Alberta, down to the US/Mexican border. Unfortunately, only one of us finished (it wasn't me). Last summer, through the misfortune of Jerry's heart condition, he was unable to do any riding, so I kept my riding local. This year, we thought the same would happen again. However, days ago, Jerry received word from his doctors that he was cleared to ride. Good thing, because we had been planning a new trip for some time. This trip is a bit shorter and flatter than the previous rides we've done together. This time we are tackling the Empire State Trail. This route, through New York state, begins in Manhattan at Battery Park, follows the Hudson River north to Albany, then joins with the Erie Canal trail, the towpath for the famous canal, westward to Buffalo. From Buffalo it's less than 200 miles back to Cleveland, so we will ride down the lakefront to Lakewood to finish our run. This should be approximately 900 miles or so, and we're hoping for a travel time of 2 weeks. So, follow along with the Dinosaurs if you wish. I'll try to post as much as possible, but sometimes it isn't easy to cover each day. Send us comments if you have them.

What to take, what to take...

What do you take when you're going on a 2 and a half month trip?  That is a really good question.    On top of that, since there might not be hotels open, add camping equipment to the mix, and the question becomes even harder.  If I was to take a normal weekend trip's luggage, multiply it by 10, I think I would be in trouble.  And the last time we went camping I think I filled the back end of our SUV with stuff.  Uh oh. Thank goodness for the Inter-web to pose the question to people who've done similar trips.  Even though there are a lot of opinions (no, people disagree online?) there were a lot of good suggestions as to what to bring, and what to leave home.  The overwhelming consensus was that you should think twice before bringing anything along that won't be used often. Now rounding the final turn...

Today we left Missouri, and in one trip across one bridge we symbolically went from the West to the East, from the South to the North, at least temporarily.  When we crossed the Mississippi, it felt like we are certainly rounding the bend and heading toward the finish line.  I know we have a good bit of riding in front of us, but based on where we started, and the non-direct route we took to get here, it seems strange to believe that we're in the home stretch when we just crossed the Mississippi.  Of the 12 maps we follow for the journey, we have completed 9.  Map #10, here we go... We started the day in Farmington, MO and we can't thank the people of that fine city enough for their great hospitality.  The cycling hostel they've created in their town is a fantastic place and it certainly makes one feel like others are caring for our safety and our security.  I hope they keep this tradition alive and continue to host cyclists.  Other cities should take ...

Hotter'n a fahrcracker on the fourth of Jool-eye

Happy 4th of July to everyone who actually might be reading this.  I hope your holiday was safe and fun. Ours was hot.   We started out in Great Bend, leaving our hotel after a quick hot breakfast courtesy of Super 8.  We were taking a bit different route today, choosing to go through Hutchinson, and if all went well, on to Newton.  The difference between would be about 40 miles, so we needed to make sure we could get to Newton if we left for there.  We used Google Maps this time, since Adventure Cycling doesn't really have a trip into Hutchinson.  And for those who go there, they advise strongly not to take US-50, which we learned from Pueblo, CO is a bit daffy.  We chose to do this route simply because it is the 4th of July, and our guess is that we aren't going to find many services open, especially in the smaller towns.   Taking a break in the heat during our Google Map meanderings Traffic was certainly that of a holiday.  There...
